Originally, the temple was situated near the First Cataract of the Nile River, however, in 1902 when the construction of the Old Aswan Dam began, the area was flooded and the complex was relocated. After lunch at Aswan restaurant you will take a short felucca ride taking you to yet another island on the Nile – Elephantine. Here you will make a close acquaintance with the most friendly and smiley people – Nubians and their simple way of life which didn’t change for centuries. You will be then taken to a hotel in Aswan, where you can enjoy your evening and overnight.

Meals: Lunch

You will check out the hotel by 03:30 am, taking your box-breakfast provided by the hotel with you. Three-hours-long drive will get you to the fascinating Abu Simbel Temples, which are doubtless among the main highlights of Egypt after the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. These unique massive temples of the Pharaoh Ramesses and his wife Nefertari were carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC and relocated to the artificial hilltop in 1968 in order to save them from being inundated after the construction of the Aswan High Dam.The temples were constructed in commemoration of Ramesses II tactical victory at the Battle of Kadesh that took place in 1274 BC. Interestingly, the ancient Egyptian architects constructed the Great Temple in such a way that twice a year (on October 22 and February 22), the sunbeams reach the inner sanctuary and lighten up three out of four sculptures. The statue of the God of the Underworld Ptah always remains in the darkness. The Small Temple dedicated to Goddess Hathor and Nefertari is also unique – first time in Egyptian architecture the statues of the Pharaoh and his wife are equal in size. The sight was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. You will be then taken back to Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Private Tour: Abu Simbel by Minibus from Aswan

95 US$ per person

Tour Itinerary

See the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel on a minibus tour from Aswan. With a qualified Egyptologist as your guide, you’ll enjoy a personalized visit to Abu Simbel on this private tour. With its four rock-hewn pharaohs, you’ll agree that the Great Temple is one of the most impressive sites in Egypt, and the highlight of any trip to Egypt.

On the short walk to the temple entrances, your guide will explain the history of the site, including details of the UNESCO-led relocation of the entire cliff face to higher ground, and how the temples were discovered by accident in 1813. Due to the large number of visitors to Abu Simbel, guides are not permitted inside either the Great Temple of Ramses II or the smaller Temple of Hathor. However, by using photos and illustrations, your guide will explain to you the structures and their interior artworks. You will then have free time to enter the temples and explore them at your leisure.

As one of the few ancient Egyptian sites which largely escaped damage by past invaders, the interiors of Abu Simbel’s temples are astounding. The scale of the buildings and their detailed decoration leaves most visitors in awe. The temples’ attraction is further enhanced by their scenic location on the edge of Lake Nasser in the orange sands of the desert.

The drive is approximately three hours each way.
